Little Bears get spotlight in Board Newsletter!

Congratualtions Grade 1 students. Your Aurasma "Our Community" Gallery Walk was featured in the June KPRDSB Newsletter!
Using Augmented Reality was really a step up to showcase your reasons for adding a new feature to our community and the people at the Board wanted to share that with everyone else! Here's the article and the video from the newsletter!

Teacher Spotlight: Augmented Reality at Murray Centennial

June 2015

Take 60 grade one students, choose a strand of the new Social Studies curriculum, collaborate with the Teacher Librarian in the lab so you can use a tech tool to show student learning and what do you get?
An Aurasma “Our Community” Social Studies Gallery Walk at Murray Centennial PS.
Aurasma is a 3D presentation tool that allows you to insert photos and videos into a trigger image. When you scan that image with the Aurasma app, the photos and videos come to life and you can see and watch everything. It was pretty mind-blowing for the grade one’s when they first saw themselves on the iPads!
The students had to design a “human-made or physical feature for Quinte West and be able to defend why they thought their feature would be of benefit to the community.”
In the classrooms, the students studied features of Quinte West and explored their understanding of our community. Next they figured out what and where they wanted their feature to be, and drew a picture of it. In the lab, the students recorded a video stating where, why and what they wanted to add to Quinte West then created their “Aura” in Aurasma Studio with the help of Lab Buddies.
Invitations were sent out to our Director, Superintendent, the Mayor, Councillors of Quinte West, the Quinte West Public Library, and our School Trustee. Along with parents and families our guests were provided with instructions to pre-download the Aura app on their devices!
The day of the Gallery Walk the students shone, informing guests why there should be a Toronto airport in QW, a zipline from the YMCA to Murray, a coffee shop in the public library, a fishing boat school, and a doggie grooming hotel by the dog park just to name a few!
Check out our project in this video!
For more information, please contact Mary Walker Hope, Teacher Librarian & TCT at Murray Centennial Public School (mary_walkerhope@kprdsb.ca)
NOTE: This project can be completed using netbooks and one mobile device to view the triggers!

Aurasma History Project!

Do you have a ticket to AURA?
In your classroom, you should already have chosen your Trigger artifact, have your images ready and in your folder in Students Commons and your video recorded and placed in your folder too.
If so, you have your ticket to AURA!

Watch this video to see how things work in Aurasma Studio.

Create an Aura in Aurasma Studio

The first thing we are going to do is get you into your School Email account so that you can set up an account in Aurasma Studio using your email account. Exciting times!!

Once that is done, we'll start importing images and video and creating our auras!

Grade 7s! Welcome back! We have applied for a technology grant for $15,000 … AND got it! And now you get to use the technology. iPads, Nikon digital cameras, professional microphones. Just wait! It's going to be amazing! The first project that was put forward to the Board was to create professional Read-Aloud books for our Primary students. Say WHAT???

You guys are going to research and check out read-aloud books that are out there on the internet right now and figure our what makes them really rock - (you're hooked and want to listen to the whole thing) and what really sucks or loses your attention before you get half way through. Once we have figured out what is going to make amazing Read-Alouds, you will each get to choose a favourite book from when you were a kid and YOU are going to become a film maker and create one of these read-alouds that we will publish on our YouTube channel for the world to see but also make a QR code for all the Primary Classes at Murray to have at their disposal to read at the listening centres they will now have with the iPads for their classrooms! Man. Long sentence!

Down to BUSINESS!  Go to any of these sites. Read Alouds 1Read Alouds 2Read Alouds 3Read Alouds 4, Read Alouds 5

Choose any of the Read-Alouds and start brainstorming on the Popplets on the Smart Board. Popplet is just a web brainstorming tool that does the "bubble organizing" for you!  Click on any bubble. Click on any of the grey and white dots and you will get a subset bubble that branches off from the main idea. Make sure you read the posts that are already there. Don't write down the same thing twice! Add to the posts if what you have to say is related!

Any great feature - add it to the "So COOL" map. Any feature we should avoid in our read-alouds, add to the "So NOT" mind map.

Good luck! I've started you with 3 categories. Let's see what you get!

If you have a Smartphone or a device that can load apps, download the app called "Augmented Reality Freedom Stories". It's free at the App Store.
You will be able to see and hear the stories of over 20 courageous Black people who found their own way to FREEDOM. Just open the app, and hold your device over the target pictures that Mme Walker Hope and Mrs. Traynor have and be amazed!
You can do this at home too by printing out the pictures at the Harriet Tubman Institute website.
Here's the link!

Hopefully at least one of these people will 'inspire you to inquire' for your project. Good luck!
